I always travel with my pets if I can. Fortunately, we usually travel by car and stay in our RV so we don?t worry about public transportation or hotels that will accept our little girls.? In the past, when we lived in Germany we used to transport our dog, Fluffy, every summer back and forth when we came home to visit family.? I was concerned about the conditions of the area where Fluffy had to travel within her kennel, but I wasn?t aware of the ?accidents? that happened to traveling animals. This was a time before cell phones and personal computers.? The news was not tweeted or sent directly to an email account from all over the world like it is now.? Ignorance was bliss ? because no bad things ever happened to our beloved Fluffy.

Livi
From the Houston Chroniclebeloved Fluffy.
Nowadays, information is almost instantaneous so I am no longer naive about the dangers of traveling or transporting my pets.? I received an email about pets who were flying on United Airlines using United?s PetSafe Program from Korea to the US and the tragedy that ensued for a dog named Livi.? When Rachel Estes arrived back in the states, her wonderful dog, Livi, and her cats weren?t there.? According to the Houston Chronicle, ?For Rachael Estes, the worst part of a two-day ordeal flying home to North Carolina from military service in Korea was being separated from her beloved dog, Livi, as it died of heat stroke in Houston.?
I realize there were extenuating circumstances such as the rerouting of the flight.? That can?t be controlled, I know.? But, United ruled that this death was not the cause of transportation.? I read the information about the PetSafe Program and it seems to me that this most certainly was the responsibility of the airline ? the program says you can get immediate feedback on where the animal is during transport through the PetSafe desk and the online tracking tool.? It took the airline 4 hours to determine where the animals were once Ms. Estes had arrived back in Charlotte.? The animals should have been on the same flight as she was.? Temperature and air pressure were to have been controlled.? Heat stroke was the cause of death. I don?t see how this was not related to transportation.
Of course, that is not my main concern.? I still don?t know what I would do if I had to take my dogs with me overseas or across country. Unfortunately, PetAirways, a service dedicated to the safe and ?luxury? transportation of pets, has fallen upon hard financial times.? I can not determine if they are still flying, but I know there are complaints of cancelled flights and about not refunding fees when some flights did not fly.? I hope they can recover, but in the mean time there don?t seem to be any good options.
If you have to transport a pet, be sure to consider flight changes, temperature of locations where the plane will be stopping, and time of layovers.? Investigate all of the issues that others have had, and check out all of the airline websites that talk about transportation of animals.? Your vet is a wonderful source of information, too.
May any travels you have with your pets be safe and enjoyable!
