Terms of Service

There are a few ground rules for participation in LAGbook. Please respect these rules, and each other.

Be civil.

No personal attacks. Do not feel compelled to defend your honor in public.

Stay on topic in Forums.

Please pay attention to the topic of your messages, and check that it still relates to its parent. Off-topic discussion not taken to private email is eligible for removal.

Be kind to newcomers.

Newcomers may be annoying. But lots of valued contributors started out this way, and treating newcomers kindly makes them more likely to turn into the valuable community members we all know and love.
So while you don't have to humor them or suffer them gladly, and it's fine to point out when they make mistakes, point newcomers in the right direction in addition to turning them away from the wrong ones, and be kind to them in the process of correcting their transgressions.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

It's tempting to revisit controversial decisions you do not agree with, but it's rarely productive to do so, since it almost always results in the same heated, lengthy, and time/energy draining discussions leading to the same conclusion that was reached in the last round.
Therefore, for issues already raised, discussed, and decided upon, reopen the discussion only if you have significant new information that would reasonably prompt reconsideration of the original decision.

Ignore spammers.

Spam is a blight upon the face of the net. Nobody likes it. However, it is hard to avoid. Despite our best efforts, you will occasionally see spam on our site. However, don't forget that complaining about spam in public increases noise, but not signal. It may make you feel better, but it doesn't help.

Identify your subject matter.

Not everyone has time reading all forum and wiki postings. To ensure that your message reach the right people at timely manner, identify your subject matter clearly in the subject line. Subjects like a question and problem are not very helpful.

No unsubscribe messages.

Unfortunately, this bears repeating.

No test messages.

Please do not send test messages to the forum. You can, however, create test pages on the Wiki, but please don't forget to delete them after you finish learning.

EXCLUSIVE - Romney on Debates: Obama Will 'Say Things That Aren't True'

With the first Presidential debate less than three weeks away, Mitt Romney is spending lots of time getting ready behind closed doors. In his first comments on that debate prep, he told me that Sen. Rob Portman is a tough stand-in for a President who basically lies in debates.

"I think the challenge that I'll have in the debate is that the president tends to, how shall I say it, to say things that aren't true," Romney said. "I've looked at prior debates. And in that kind of case, it's difficult to say, 'Well, am I going to spend my time correcting things that aren't quite accurate? Or am I going to spend my time talking about the things I want to talk about?"

The former governor told me he's tempted to use Ronald Reagan's famous line against President Carter in a 1980 debate, "There you go again" - the same line that Bill Clinton turned on Romney and the Republicans at the Democratic convention in Charlotte.

When I asked if Portman was crushing him in early debate preps, Romney was coy.

"I'm not revealing those kind of secrets. But I will never debate Rob Portman again," Romney said with a laugh.

"He's very good," he said.

[Senator John McCain expressed a similar sentiment after going against Portman in his 2008 debate prep. McCain later told the New York Times, laughing, "I hate him still."]

The debates are at a critical moment in the campaign with the latest polls showing Obama gaining an edge over Romney in the key battleground states.

Romney told me the debates "may well be" the campaign's make or break moment.

"Sometimes there's something big that happens and they become deciding. Other times, it's like, well, nothing really changed. We're in the same spot we were before the debates. I can't predict what'll happen. But I think it'll be revealing one way or the other," he said.

Romney said he wasn't concerned about new polls showing him trailing in Virginia and Ohio - even though it's virtually impossible for him to get the 270 electoral votes he needs without victories in those two states.

"Well, I'm ahead in a lot of other states, too. I saw one this morning, ahead in Florida, ahead in North Carolina. Gosh, we're even tied in Wisconsin," Romney told me. "These polls are going to bounce around a lot. I don't pay a lot of attention day to day to which state's up and which one's down. But I believe that when the final decisions are being made by the American people, they're going to ask themselves, "Who do I have confidence in to keep America safe? And who do I believe can get our economy doing what it needs to do?"

Romney said the most important numbers in this election are 23, 47 and 16.

"23 million Americans out of work or underemployed. 47 million people on food stamps. $16 trillion in debt. And now the Federal Reserve, it says, " Look, this economy is not going well," he said.

And it's because of those economic conditions some Republican allies are worried. George Will on "This Week" said "If the Republican Party cannot win in this environment, it has to get out of politics and find another business." Laura Ingraham said "If you can't beat Barack Obama with this record, then shut down the party, shut it down."

"Well you know, beating an incumbent is never easy. The president exudes an air of likability and friendliness, which is endearing," Romney told me. "But at the same time, I think people recognize that he has not done the job they expected him to do and that he promised he would do."

The race will be decided by "the people in the middle" who "won't make their mind up until the very, very last moment," the former governor said.

And many of those people - 63% of registered voters - want more details about what a Romney presidency would look like, according to our latest ABC News/ Washington Post poll.

The former governor cited his 59 point - and more than 150 pages - economic plan that he released, but acknowledged that "people aren't going to sit down and read a book."

"So that means that in the speeches I give over the coming weeks I need to lay out some of the principles that were described in that book. And I will in more detail," he said.

Democrats say Romney's plan would cause a $2000 tax hike on the middle class - something Romney disputes and points to a number of studies that say his plan to cut taxes will not increase the deficit, including one by Harvard professor Martin Feldstein.

Feldstein says Romney's math will work, but he would have to eliminate the home mortgage, charitable, state and local tax deductions for incomes greater than $100,000.

When I pressed Romney on that point, he conceded that he actually hadn't read the Feldstein report that he and Paul Ryan cite on the campaign trail.

"I haven't seen his precise study," he said.

"I said that there are five different studies that point out that we can get to a balanced budget without raising taxes on middle income people. Let me tell you, George, the fundamentals of my tax policy are these. Number one, reduce tax burdens on middle-income people. So no one can say my plan is going to raise taxes on middle-income people, because principle number one is keep the burden down on middle-income taxpayers," he said.

Romney defined middle income as $200,000 to $250,000 a year.

"Number two, don't reduce the share of taxes paid by the wealthiest. The top 5% will still pay the same share of taxes they pay today. That's principle one, principle two. Principle three is create incentives for growth, make it easier for businesses to start and to add jobs. And finally, simplify the code, make it easier for people to pay their taxes than the way they have to now," he said.

When I asked if he and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, would specify which loopholes they would close in order to pay for the tax cuts, Romney said he's relying on his experience as Massachusetts governor.

"I've found that you have to work with the people across the aisle. My legislature was 87% Democrat. So if I'd have come out and said, "Here this is my bill. This is the way I want it," you'd never get it done," he said. "You lay out your principles. Those are my principles, don't raise taxes on middle-income people, make sure the high-income people pay the same share they're paying today, encourage growth by bringing down rates, and finally simplify the code. Those are my principles. I'll stick with them. And I believe that's going to help get the economy going and grow jobs."

I also asked the presidential candidate about a recent poll number that showed registered voters by a 19% margin would prefer to have dinner with Obama instead of Romney.

So what's dinner like at the Romney house? "Chaotic," he said.

"You'd have grandkids climbing all over you. Probably some food would be thrown from one side of the table to the other by one of my grandkids. It'd be a lot of fun," he said.

"So I can't tell people who would have more fun at whose table. But I can tell you the president's a person that a lot of people like. I don't dislike him myself and wish him the very best. But I think the American people are looking for someone who has the capacity to help them get good jobs and more take-home pay. And I do," Romney told me.

Egyptians clash with police barring way to U.S. embassy

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians angry at a film they said was blasphemous to Islam on Friday hurled stones at a line of police in Cairo blocking the route to the U.S. embassy, where demonstrators climbed the walls and tore down the American flag earlier this week.

"God is greatest" and "There is no god but God", one group near the front of the clashes chanted, as police in riot gear fired tear gas and threw stones back in a street leading from Tahrir Square to the embassy nearby.

About 300 people had gathered to protest, some waving flags with religious slogans. State media reported that 224 people had been injured since Wednesday night. The initial protest, in which the embassy walls were scaled, took place on Tuesday.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the group that propelled President Mohamed Mursi to power, had called for a peaceful nationwide protest against the film on Friday after it sparked demonstrations across the region. Many Muslims regard any depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as blasphemous.

The U.S. ambassador in Libya was killed by gunmen on Tuesday and the U.S. mission in Yemen was attacked by protesters on Thursday.

Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president, has to strike a delicate balance, fulfilling a pledge to protect the embassy of a major aid donor while also being seen by his Islamist backers to take a strong line against the film.

Mursi said on Thursday he had spoken to U.S. President Barack Obama and had asked him to act against those seeking to harm relations. His Cabinet said Washington was not to blame for the film but urged legal action against those insulting religion.

"Before the police, we were attacked by Obama, and his government, and the Coptic Christians living abroad," shouted one protester, wearing a traditional robe and long beard favored by some ultra-orthodox Muslims, as he pointed to the police cordon.

Egypt's Coptic Orthodox church has condemned what it said were Copts abroad who had financed the film.

"NO LONGER AN ALLY"

In the middle of the street lay an overturned and burnt out car. Behind the police line, the authorities had erected a wall of large concrete blocks barring access to the fortress-like embassy, which is close to Tahrir, the center of protests against ousted former President Hosni Mubarak and the scene of many demonstrations since.

The United States, a close ally of Egypt under Mubarak, has long been wary of Islamists, only formally opening contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood last year, several months after Mubarak's 30-year rule was ended by a popular uprising.

Al-Masry Al-Youm highlighted comments Obama made to a Spanish-language network saying Egypt was neither an enemy nor an ally. "America: Egypt is no longer an ally," the daily newspaper wrote in a front page headline.

The United States has a large embassy in Cairo, partly because of a vast aid program that began after Egypt signed a peace deal with Israel in 1979. Washington gives $1.3 billion in aid each year to the army plus additional funds to Egypt.

Though some demonstrators wore clothes favored by ultra-orthodox Islamists, many were young men in jeans and T-shirts. Some perched on barriers along the street watching the ebb-and-flow, as demonstrators pushed forward to hurl stones, and then ran back towards Tahrir under a volley of tear gas.

"I came here to have a look at the people, to see what they are saying and see if what they say is right," said Mohamed Ahmed, sitting with friends as teargas wafted through the air.

Some Egyptians have been angered by the violence. One picture circulating on Facebook showed a burnt out car accompanied by the words: "People go to defend the Prophet with petrol bombs and religious insults to the police. They don't pray at noon or in the afternoon. Who are they?"

Police had tried to clear the street leading to the embassy and Tahrir around dawn on Friday with clouds of teargas after a second night of violence. But protesters returned soon afterwards.

One banner held aloft by demonstrators read: "It is the duty of all Muslims and Christians to kill Morris Sadek and Sam Bacile and everyone who participated in the film."

The two people named are both linked to the film. Sadek, a Copt living in the United States, told Reuters this week he promoted the film to highlight discrimination against Christians who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's 83 million people.

Sudanese storm German embassy, hoist Islamic flag

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese demonstrators incensed by a film that insults the Prophet Mohammad broke into the German embassy in Khartoum on Friday and hoisted an Islamic flag, while one person was killed in protests in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

The obscure California-made production had triggered an attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans on Tuesday, the anniversary of the Sept 11, 2001 al Qaeda attacks on the United States.

Rallies against the film were also staged on Friday in Egypt, Yemen, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Lebanon, Iran and Iraq.

Protesters clashed with police near the U.S. embassy in Cairo before a nationwide protest called by the Muslim Brotherhood which propelled Egypt's Islamist president Mohamed Mursi to power.

Police in the Sudanese capital fired tear gas to try to disperse 5,000 protesters who had ringed the German embassy and nearby British mission. A Reuters witness said police stood by as a crowd forced its way into Germany's mission.

Demonstrators hoisted a black Islamic flag saying in white letters "there is no God but God and Mohammed is his prophet". They smashed windows, cameras and furniture in the building and then started a fire.

Staff at Germany's embassy were safe "for the moment", Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said in Berlin. He also told Khartoum's envoy to Berlin that Sudan must protect diplomatic missions on its soil.

Witnesses said police fired tear gas at thousands of protesters to stop them approaching the U.S. embassy outside Khartoum.

Sudan's Foreign Ministry had criticised Germany for allowing a protest last month by right-wing activists carrying caricatures of the Prophet and for Chancellor Angela Merkel giving an award in 2010 to a Danish cartoonist who depicted the Prophet in 2005 triggering protests across the Islamic world.

BASHIR UNDER PRESSURE

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is under pressure from Islamists who feel the government has given up the religious values of his 1989 Islamist coup.

The official body of Sudan's Islamic scholars called for the faithful to defend the Prophet peacefully, but at a meeting of Islamists, some leaders had said they would march on the German and U.S. embassies and demanded the ambassadors be expelled.

"Tomorrow we will all get out to defend Prophet Mohammad ... We will do this peacefully but with strength," Salah el-Din Awad, general secretary of the scholars' body in Khartoum state told reporters after meeting government officials on Thursday.

The Foreign Ministry said in its statement: "The German chancellor unfortunately welcomed this offence to Islam in a clear violation of all meanings of religious co-existence and tolerance between religions."

Sudan used to host prominent militants in the 1990s, such as Osama bin Laden, but the government has sought to distance itself from radicals to improve ties with the West.

A Lebanese security source said the man was killed in Tripoli as protesters tried to storm a government building.

Earlier, a U.S. fast food restaurant was set alight. Twelve members of the security forces were wounded by stones thrown by protesters, the source said.

The protests coincided with Pope Benedict's arrival in Lebanon for a three-day visit.

WASHINGTON'S DILEMMA

Protesters also clashed with police in Yemen, where one person died and 15 were injured on Thursday when the U.S. embassy compound was stormed.

In Nigeria, where radical Islamist sect Boko Haram has killed hundreds this year in an insurgency, the government put police on alert and stepped up security around foreign missions.

U.S. and other Western embassies in other Muslim countries had tightened security, fearing anger at the film may prompt attacks on their compounds after the weekly worship.

The protests present U.S. President Barack Obama with a new foreign policy crisis less than two months before seeking re-election and tests Washington's relations with democratic governments it helped to power across the Arab world.

Obama has vowed to bring those responsible for the Benghazi attack to justice, and the United States sent warships towards Libya which one official said was to give flexibility for any future action.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington had nothing to do with the crudely made film posted on the Internet, which she called "disgusting and reprehensible", and the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff called a Christian pastor in Florida to ask him to withdraw his support for it.

Protesters in Afghanistan set fire to an effigy of Obama and burned a U.S. flag after Friday prayers in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

Directing their anger against the U.S. pastor who supported the film, tribal leaders in province also agreed to put a $100,000 bounty on his head.

About 10,000 people held a noisy protest in the Bangladeshi capital. They burned U.S. flags, chanted anti-U.S. slogans and demanded punishment for the offenders, but were stopped from marching to the U.S. embassy. There was no violence.

Thousands of Iranians held nationwide protests.

HBT: Astros start interviewing for manager

Astros owner Jim Crane took a break from answering Roger Clemens-related questions long enough to say that the team has narrowed down its list of managerial candidates and will interview 6-8 of them this week.

So far interim manager Tony DeFrancesco is the only known candidate, as both Crane and general manager Jeff Luhnow declined to reveal any other names. DeFrancesco is 5-15 since taking over for Brad Mills, who was fired after going 171-274 (.384) in two-plus seasons on the job.

And what are they looking for in a manager? Previous experience managing in the majors is not a prerequisite and according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com ?the Astros want a manager who?s capable of taking the analytical information from the front office and then utilizing it to make better decisions on the field, as well as one who?s adept at working with young players.?

Prince William's wife gives her 1st speech abroad

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Prince William's wife, Kate, stressed the importance of specialized medical care for seriously ill children Thursday in her first speech outside the United Kingdom.

The Duchess of Cambridge said while visiting a Malaysian hospice that "lives can be transformed" by providing places of support for child patients and their families.

The royal couple is on a nine-day tour of the Far East and South Pacific in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.

William and Kate arrived in Malaysia on Thursday after visiting Singapore. They had lunch with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and other government officials before visiting a hospice in a Kuala Lumpur suburb.

Kate delivered a nearly two-minute speech from a prepared text. She read slowly, looking up and smiling occasionally at the hospice's staff and patients.

Kate, who is patron of the East Anglia Children's Hospice, a U.K.-based charity, said she was excited to be learning about Malaysia's first palliative care program for children.

During a private visit inside the hospice, William and Kate chatted with young patients and drew on clay bricks. William drew a cat and mouse that resembled cartoon characters Tom and Jerry, while Kate drew a tree with birds flying above it, according to British Embassy representatives.

About 20 children from a nearby kindergarten waited for the couple to arrive outside the facility. Some waved Malaysian flags and a colorful banner that included the words "Welcome" and "We love you."

William and Kate visited the Kranji Commonwealth War Memorial in Singapore on Thursday and are scheduled to visit a Malaysian tropical jungle region on Borneo island before heading to the Solomon Islands on Saturday. They'll finish their tour in Tuvalu.

Romania International Internship - McKay School of Education

The country of Romania, with its rich culture and history, has been the ideal atmosphere for an academic and service-oriented internship for students at Brigham Young University.? The Department of Counseling Psychology and Special Education (CPSE) in the McKay School of Education and several other colleges on campus send students to take part in this internship working with children in orphanages and hospitals.

This 90-day program in Ia?i (pronounced ?yawsh?), Romania started when a faculty member in the BYU Sociology Department was touched by a news story on the terrible conditions of Romania?s orphanages.? Since then, students and faculty from the Marriage and Family Life, Psychology, Human Development, Counseling Psychology and Special Education, and Sociology Departments have all been involved in running and attending the internship in Ia?i. ?The internship is under the direction of a committee of various departments, and we consider it a strength that it is not under the direction of one person,? said Betty Ashbaker, CPSE professor.

Students who go to Romania have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings.? They volunteer in an orphanage that serves primarily children with various disabilities.? BYU interns help foster their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development.? ?Since many children without disabilities are now being adopted or placed in group homes, the remaining children in the orphanage have significant disabilities and are in great need of instruction, support, and care by our BYU interns,? said Tina Dyches, CPSE professor. Interns also work in group homes where children live in more normalized environments than the orphanage, usually with up to six children and one or two caregivers. In these homes they are able to enjoy home-cooked meals, share a bedroom with only a few other children, and play in community playgrounds. Some children are even able to attend their neighborhood schools.

Some of the children who are placed in orphanages are not actually orphans.? Their parents are just not able to take care of them and do not have the resources to provide enough food.? ?Lots of children have familythat come visit,? Ashbaker said.? ?Giving them up so they can be fed and provided for is the ultimate sacrifice.? Students work with all the children and assess their developmental needs.? ?It is not just about being loved and held; they also need to be taught [and] molded, be spoken to, and learn how to use toys,?Ashbaker said.

In addition to working in the orphanage and group homes, students spend time in a local hospital and provide comfort and care to children who are sick and not able to be with their families. Recently, they began working in a hospital for premature babies. Working in both the orphanage, group homes, and the hospitals allows students to have learning experiences in different settings and to apply the things they have learned to their life back home.? ?It is these experiences that teach our students how to be great parents by going to [Romania to] parent and love other children,? Ashbaker said.

Beyond the work in the orphanage and hospital, students take nine credit hours of academic classes, including cultural experience and Romanian-language instruction from a native Romanian.

The Romanian International Internship allows students to immerse themselves in an international cultural experience.? ?By going to Romania, I have learned how different cultures view children with disabilities and how they care for them,? said Ellie Young, CPSE professor.? ?Going there broadens my perspective and my world view, which I appreciate very much.?

?Romania isn?t just a country, it?s a people and children whom you grow to love,? said Aimee Fresh, a Special Education major.? ?The feelings I felt going to Romania, and the person I have become through my experiences I owe to this wonderful internship.?

At least 200,000 tons of oil and gas from Deepwater Horizon spill consumed by Gulf bacteria

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? Researchers from the University of Rochester and Texas A&M University have found that, over a period of five months following the disastrous 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill, naturally-occurring bacteria that exist in the Gulf of Mexico consumed and removed at least 200,000 tons of oil and natural gas that spewed into the deep Gulf from the ruptured well head.

The researchers analyzed an extensive data set to determine not only how much oil and gas was eaten by bacteria, but also how the characteristics of this feast changed with time.

"A significant amount of the oil and gas that was released was retained within the ocean water more than one-half mile below the sea surface. It appears that the hydrocarbon-eating bacteria did a good job of removing the majority of the material that was retained in these layers," said co-author John Kessler of the University of Rochester.

The results published this week in Environmental Science and Technology include the first measurements of how the rate at which the bacteria ate the oil and gas changed as this disaster progressed, information that is fundamental to understanding both this spill and predicting the behavior of future spills.

Kessler noted: "Interestingly, the oil and gas consumption rate was correlated with the addition of dispersants at the wellhead. While there is still much to learn about the appropriateness of using dispersants in a natural ecosystem, our results suggest it made the released hydrocarbons more available to the native Gulf of Mexico microorganisms."

Their measurements show that the consumption of the oil and gas by bacteria in the deep Gulf had stopped by September 2010, five months after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. "It is unclear if this indicates that this great feast was over by this time or if the microorganisms were simply taking a break before they start on dessert and coffee" said Kessler. "Our results suggest that some (about 40%) of the released hydrocarbons that once populated these layers still remained in the Gulf post September 2010, so food was available for the feast to continue at some later time. But the location of those substances and whether they were biochemically transformed is unknown."

Previous studies of the Deepwater Horizon spill had shown that the oil and gas were trapped in underwater layers, or "plumes," and that the bacteria had begun consuming the oil and gas. By using a more extensive data set, the researchers were able to measure just how many tons of hydrocarbons released from the spill had been removed in the deep Gulf waters. The team's research suggests that the majority of what once composed these large underwater plumes of oil and gas was eaten by the bacteria.

Professor John Kessler, recently appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Rochester, worked with graduate research assistant Mengran Du at Texas A&M University to analyze over 1300 profiles of oxygen dissolved in the Gulf of Mexico water spanning a period of four months and covering nearly 30,000 square miles.

The researchers calculated how many tons of oil and gas had been consumed and at what rate by first measuring how much oxygen had been removed from the ocean. Mengran Du explained that "when bacteria consume oil and gas, they use up oxygen and release carbon dioxide, just as humans do when we breathe. When bacteria die and decompose, that uses up still more oxygen. Both these processes remove oxygen from the water." Du added that it is this lower oxygen level that the researchers could measure and use as an indicator of how much oil and gas had been removed by microorganisms and at what rate.

The work was supported by the National Science Foundation with additional contributions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Sloan Foundation, BP/the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, and the Chinese Scholarship Council.

??? ???? ?????? ?????? Sufi News and Sufism World Report: Timbuktu ...

In this excellent montage Alexandra Huddleston closes by reminding us of a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad -- still learned and taught in Timbuktu -- "the ink of the scholar is more precious than the blood of the martyr." These words echo today as a reminder that the mainstream Islamic tradition has always harbored the most profound respect for scholarship and sanctity while questioning worldly ambitions.
Unfortunately, the "radical Islam" of groups like Ansar Dine and al-Qaida have spilled far too much blood and ink in Northern Mali and beyond. Armed with deadly weapons, a false doctrine of jihad, and a perverse sense of martyrdom they have committed countless acts of violence. While the Western imagination is captivated by fear of 'radical Islam' its victims -- in Timbuktu as elsewhere -- are almost invariably Muslims.
Ms. Huddleston shows us their faces -- the men, women, and children of Timbuktu -- many warmly rejoicing in the pleasures of ancient knowledge, all fully connected to the contemporary world. In a single blow they have suffered a double violence: their lives and ways of life have been taken, and their religion has been disfigured, disgraced, and defamed by their tormentors.
It is important to understand that the leadership of groups like Ansar Dine and al-Qaida often has little or no formal training in the Islamic religious sciences. This does not stop them from passing judgment upon the Islam of their well-learned and lettered adversaries. To make up for their lack of knowledge they routinely resort to spectacles of symbolic violence, desecrating the tombs of scholars and destroying manuscripts. They seek, not only to cow opposition, but to wipe the slate clean of competing forms of Islamic authority
In a place like Timbuktu this is no small task, for it first gained an international reputation for Islamic knowledge in the fourteenth century when the great medieval empire of Mali was at its height. Its fame as a city of learning attracted students and scholars from all over West Africa as well as the Maghrib, Egypt, Baghdad and Damascus.
Though they usually maintained cordial relations with emperors, the scholars and teachers of Timbuktu, like most West African Islamic scholars, tended to scrupulously avoid overt involvement in politics. Islamists like to say "Islam is religion and politics," but this is no Prophetic tradition, it is a maxim little more than a century old. It was coined as some began to transform Islam from a universal religion to an ideology of resistance to Western imperialism. The classical tradition, of which Timbuktu was an integral part--tended to be suspicious of such things. As a rule it preferred for scholars to maintain a pious distance from power for fear that it might corrupt their intellectual and ethical autonomy. In the West, efforts to separate church and state evolved primarily to protect the latter. In Muslim Africa scholars and saints usually maintained distance to protect the former. Continue reading here? The article also contains an excellent video.
