MTV Act Blog ? The Hook Up: Relationship Advice on Love, Lust + ...

Photo: (Everyone Is Gay)

MTV Act and the It?s Your (Sex) Life campaign are beyond psyched to announce a new weekly relationship advice column with two of our favorite ladies in all the land: Kristin Russo and Dannielle Owens-Reid.

From the the awkward to the complicated to the down-right-adorable, these girls have you covered. To submit your question about love, lust or anything in between, email us at mtvhookup@gmail.com. We?d love to hear from you, and your question could be chosen for a future column! FYI, in case you?re a little shy, all questions can be anonymous.

Q: How many times can you hook up with someone before it?s considered dating?

Dannielle Says:
one.
IF YOU'RE ME.
You guys, I'm the most ridiculous human. Some girl kissed me and i was like 'THIS MEANS WE ARE DATING' ... you know?
This is totally different for every person. I had a friend who hooked up with the same person and no one else for two years and if you said they were dating they would have laughed you off the face of the planet.
Check in with yourself. Know that it's totally okay to want to date the person you're hooking up with and then TALK TO THEM. Either (1) they'll be like 'omg i was feeling the same way let?s do this' and you'll be like EEEEE or (2) they'll be like 'ohh but i kind of enjoy hooking up with no labels' and you'll be in the exact same position you are now. You literally have nothing to lose. SO, follow your loins and follow your heart. If you feel googley and want to be buying flowers for your hookupbuddy, go for it. I HAVE FAITH IN YOUR SIXTH SENSE.

Kristin Says:
five.
IF YOU'RE ME.
The lesson here is obviously that there is no magic make-out number that pushes you over the dating threshold. I do think, though, that showing up with flowers and a name tag that says "Mrs. or Mr. THEIRLASTNAME" on your jacket after one kiss is probably a little too fast.
If you aren't into dating, then I would suggest casually tossing that into conversation after make-out session three or four. Key word here is casually. Don't look the person in the eye and scream "I WILL NOT DATE YOU, I WILL NOT!" That will never go over well.
If you are totally wanting to date all over this person, then I would again go the route of subtlety. Perhaps you hold their hand while you watch Pitch Perfect after make-out session number four. Perhaps you ask them if they'd like to have exclusive rights to your lips during make-out session number five.
We all have different numbers, but being upfront about these things is a much easier way to find out what kind of relationship you are seeking. Also, if this question is about me and we have made out five times, we are dating. No need to ask.

Q: I?ve had sex before but I?m starting to date someone new and just don?t feel like it yet. Any advice on how I can explain that?

Dannielle Says:
I mean, unless you're literally in the middle of DOING THE DEED as you send in this question, i think it's pretty easy to ask your booboo to take it slowly.
Maybe it feels weird, but the fact of the matter is, you don't wanna jump right into boner-town because you really like this relationship you are potentially building and THAT IS A WONDERFUL THING. If i was trying to get frisky with someone and they were like 'hey, can we slow down a little bit? I like you a lot and i just wanna see where we go before we swap boners' I would SWOON.
I think it's the greatest thing. I ALSO KNOW THAT it's weird to stop in the middle of making out hardcore BUT i want to encourage you to do so by yelling something fun like 'NO EGGS IN THIS BASKET' or 'LEAVE ROOM FOR JESUS' or 'WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE' ... all of these things should stop your boo right in their tracks and make them go 'wha?' which is the perfect way to start a conversation.

Kristin Says:
Omg. I cannot wait to shout "No eggs in this basket" at my next potential suitor.
Moving on... I agree with Dannielle. None of us should be afraid to speak our minds and our hearts and our desires with another human being. What's more, if this is a human that you are swooning over, chances are they are swooning right back and are going to be thrilled that you have thoughts and opinions to share on the matter.
When I entered into my last relationship, I was basically yanking off all of my clothes as quickly as possible. The person I was dating, however, was like, "Hey, I totally want to do all of those things, but I think we should wait a bit. However, can we PLEASE continue to make-out!"
YOU GUYS.
THE MAKING OUT WAS THE BEST MAKING OUT IN ALL THE WORLD, EVER EVER.
Say exactly what you are thinking! Just highlight the fact that you are totally into mashing mouths and having fun, but you'd like to take it slow - and that from your experience, taking it slow makes the journey even more enjoyable. If your boo gives you an attitude, they can hit the curb. There are plenty of us out here who will party with you in make-out-ville until you are good and ready for more.

Kristin Russo and Dannielle Owens-Reid are the co-creators of Everyone is Gay, a website and organization promoting kindness between all people, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. The views expressed in these blog posts are the viewsof the authors alone, and do not necessarily reflect the views of MTV, KFF or the It?s Your Sex Life campaign.

Avoiding Business Horror Stories | DemGen Inc. - Virtual Sales ...

So far, we?ve been discussing marketing strategies and tactics. But even the best marketing is useless if you don?t actually do what you say.

Through supporting hundreds of businesses, here at DemGen, we?ve seen and heard A LOT of horror stories? (It?s scary out there!)

The unfortunate reality is that there are a lot of charlatans ? both in business and with contractors.

Chances are you?re recalling your own horror stories right now: Lofty promises that aren?t lived up to; overpriced products or services; egos without justification; bad attitudes; swindlers and scam artists. We?ve all been there at least once!

There are many out there that feel false promises are good marketing, but ? the truth always comes to light.

You?re only as good as your most recent work, so be careful to protect your reputation both in the claims you make and the team you surround yourself with.

Our clients often come to us after working with shady contractors that promise the world and don?t deliver. They?re traumatized by the experience and question if we can really do what we say.

If anything, we do even more than we say! We?re a unique bunch, in that we?re entrepreneurial minded and don?t really like to brag. We prefer to let our work speak for itself and truly believe in the businesses we choose to work with.

Often, we find our prospects are in such shock, they find it hard to hand over the reins. Our expert team can only assist as much as we?re allowed to. Micromanaging and penny pinching prevent us from implementing what we know we need to. Our clients? success is our success.

We?ve been doing this for years. Despite the horror stories we know are true, we know the value our team can add. We have no time for false promises ? we?re busy building companies.

Regardless of if you work with us, it?s essential for you to be open and honest with your team to build mutual trust. The more your team understands both you and your business, the more successfully they can implement your vision and provide results.

Being great means under promising and over delivering to keep your clients happy ? always and all ways. Marketing will get you the attention, but then you must actually deliver and provide excellent service to keep your customers happy. There is no quick fix ? only dedication and hard work.

Your team is just as important as your marketing. They are your ambassadors. It?s essential that they understand and believe just as much as you do, or it will eventually reflect badly on both you and your business.

Avoid horror stories by surrounding yourself with the right team. Ask the right questions to ensure what?s being promised will actually be delivered. Be a fearless leader and demand the best to provide the best.

Ensure your business is truly scalable and the right people are in place before ramping up your marketing strategies to be sure you?ll be able to handle increased activity your efforts bring.

Be a success story, not a horror story!

In honor of Halloween, I leave you with the Ghostbusters theme song. ?If you?re all alone, pick up the phone and call?? (We?re the ?Ghostbusters? for business.) ?Who ya gonna call?? DemGen!

In Sandy's path, reality of destruction sets in

One day after Sandy slammed into the East Coast, NBC News' Lester Holt reports on the record-breaking hybrid storm system that swamped neighborhoods, paralyzed the nation's biggest city, and left millions of families from the Carolinas to Ohio without power.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

From the devastated New Jersey shore to eerily empty lower Manhattan, tens of millions of Americans lived through Sandy's fury and were trying to come to grips with its destruction as the storm waters slowly receded.

The impact of the storm was virtually without parallel in the densely populated tristate region of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, with its destructive winds, heavy flooding and raging fires. Farther afield, powerful gusts felled trees and knocked out power for up to 8.2 million residents?across?the eastern United States, while heavy snow made travel treacherous at?higher?elevations. Nationwide at least 47 were confirmed dead of storm-related causes.

"This was literally the storm of our lifetime," said Longport, N.J., Mayor Nick Russo, as he surveyed the damage on debris-littered streets of his Atlantic coast town Tuesday. "No one has seen this type of damage, not even in the 1962 storm. The amount of sand, wood and concrete that has actually come up from the streets ? it's not a good scene."

Superstorm Sandy made landfall Monday evening on a destructive and deadly path across the Northeast.

Two hundred miles to the north in Mastic Beach, N.Y., Donna Vollaro, 53, covered her face with her hands and sobbed as she walked through her ranch-style home, which had been inundated by several feet of water.

The water had receded by Tuesday afternoon but left the Long Island house filled with mud. Everything inside destroyed.

"My bed was floating around in three feet of water. The floors are buckled. The walls are caved in. Everything I own is gone," she said.

Vollaro, who is disabled and unemployed, has no homeowner's insurance and said she recently spent her savings on renovating the home. Inside, the refrigerator lay on its side, the couch was soaked and the boiler was destroyed.

"Now I have nowhere to go. Just the clothes on my back. That's what I have," she said.

TODAY's Natalie Morales reports from Mantoloking, N.J., where an aerial view of the region shows fires burning and sand completely overtaking neighborhoods.

'Like a tsunami'
On New York's Coney Island, Mordechai Deutscher recalled watching floodwaters burst through the glass front doors of the Mermaid Manor Home for Adults, about two blocks from the famed boardwalk. Residents had been evacuated to upper floors.

"Everything was fine and dandy yesterday until high tide," said Deutscher, 58, administrator of the?home. "All of a sudden within five minutes it was like a tsunami."

Sal and Lori Novello rode out the storm in their Long Island home, with candles providing the only light and a wind-up radio their connection to the outside world. Sal Novello, 50, said when water started rushing into their 5,000-square-foot Dutch colonial, "it sounded like Niagara Falls." They ended up with seven feet of water in the basement.

NBC's Lester Holt reports from New Jersey, where the eye of Superstorm Sandy came ashore, ripping apart the coastline and leaving millions without power. President Obama is expected to tour the area Wednesday with Governor Christie.

"They kind of warned us, and everybody knew it was coming," said Novello, a construction executive who lives in n Lindenhurst, N.Y.?"Unfortunately it was everything they said it was."

Ken Pagliarulo, a 34-year-old computer consultant in Lindenhurst, watched from his window Monday night as a house burned to the ground. Water filled his living room and totaled his car in the garage. He shut down the power, shut down the gas and ran generators for electricity.

"Insane," he said.

In Washington, D.C., as Sandy made landfall, Russ Kelley had two bad options: stay inside after a giant oak fell on his roof or dash outside where massive winds whipped three downed ? and live ? power lines not far from his front door.

TODAY's Al Roker tours Atlantic City, N.J., with Mayor Lorenzo Langford, who re-addressed his feud about hurricane preparedness with Governor Chris Christie and laid out a plan to rebuild the city's iconic boardwalk that was torn apart by the storm.

Jason Decrow / AP

Firefighters work at the scene of a house fire in in Lindenhurst, New York, Monday.

"Here's the thing ? the fire department advised us all to come out of our row houses because of this tree lying on top. But then there's this hurricane outside with 60 mile-per-hour gusts, still pouring rain, a couple of live wires down in the street and another live wire out in my yard," said Kelley.

"It seemed just safer to be in my house, tree and all," he said.

So Kelley brushed aside the wet oak limbs and took his dog, Clinton, back into the living room ? just below the fallen, 60-foot tree ? as his TV screen continued to flash images of the historic storm that had just crashed into his life.

Dangling crane
In Manhattan, the experience was sometimes more surreal than perilous, after subways and businesses shut down and power outages afflicted much of the city.

In the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, retired local newspaper publisher Robert Trentlyon and his wife planned to stay in their darkened apartment Tuesday, although their son lives in a nearby complex that generates its own power. The Trentlyons had phone service and running water, and they routinely use the stairs to their brownstone apartment.

Robert is 83, but, he said: "I'm a good 83," as he planned to grab a flashlight and check whether the building's basement had flooded.

An apartment building sits damaged in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood Monday.

Some 900 guests were forced to evacuate Manhattan's Le Parker Meridien hotel because a storm-damaged crane dangled dangerously from a high-rise apartment building under construction nearby.

Authorities said they were worried the wilted crane above would tumble down, perhaps pinball into neighboring buildings and crush everything in its path on the ground.

The skyscraper, near Carnegie Hall, is officially called One57 but has been dubbed a "global billionaires' club" because its upper floors will include nine enormous, posh apartments ? all sold to billionaires.

"So all of our hurricane food is upstairs in our hotel, we're on a quest to find another hotel, and technically, I'm homeless,"?said Al Lewis, a guest from Denver who had been staying in the hotel with his wife and two children.?"I'm homeless because of these billionaires next door. But, everyone's going to get displaced by a billionaire someday ? it's just my time, I guess."

Baking in the cold
Several states to the south, freezing bands of the same gargantuan storm began dumping snow onto tiny Belington, W.Va.,?(population 1,900). By 3 a.m. Tuesday, when Charlotte Cummings arrived to work at the Goody Basket,?her bakery,?there was already?six inches of snow?on the ground.

"Six inches is nothing for around here," Cummings said. "So I just started my day, started baking. Then, at about 8 a.m. the power went out because the snow is so wet and so many branches are coming down. Thankfully, I have gas so I could just keep going."

Bebeto Matthews / AP

The tail end of an SUV is perched on top of a mailbox in New York's Coney Island Monday.

By morning, a foot of snow had fallen ? and another foot or more was expected before the slow-moving storm lumbered on. After daylight, three young men walked past the Goody Basket and told Cummings: "This is the first open sign we've seen!"

"They had some pepperoni rolls and some chocolate chip cookies," Cummings said. "I stayed open till about 2 o'clock (p.m.). In fact, before I came home, I just pulled the last pan out of the oven ? three dozen pepperoni rolls."

Kelvin Redmond, an accountant and associate minister at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Rockville Centre on Long Island, lives two blocks from the water in a three-story split level, but hadn't been able to get back to check on damage because the streets were still impassable.

Ahead of the storm, he shut off all the power and moved his belongings, computers and irreplaceable items like photos to the third floor.

"It looks like it may be a total loss," he said Tuesday. "But I still have my health and strength. I'm also a minister, so I still ? it's going to be a good word on Sunday."

NBC's Kari Huus, contributor Bill Briggs and The Associated Press contributed to this story.

The Reference Frame: Is Hurricane Sandy unprecedented?

East Coast people's reports about their observations and courage are more than welcome

The media are full of panic and strong words inspired by Hurricane Sandy, the "Frankenstorm" as some writers nicknamed it. Of course, this moniker ? perhaps originally meant to indicate the Halloween time ? is popular especially among those crackpots who want to argue that the storm is "man-made". Others are more modest and use the terms "mammoth, monster, superstorm" for Sandy.

A region of the New Jersey and Delaware coast is predicted to be "more like than not" to experience hurricane speeds (at least once, the 1-minute average speed must be above 74 mph). Also, see a photo gallery (27 pics) and the live broadcast from Weather Channel.

Events are being cancelled, institutions and major parts of the public transportation systems are being closed, and hundreds of thousands of people are being evacuated because of the late Category 1 hurricane that should land somewhere in New Jersey sometime on Monday evening, Eastern Daylight Saving Time, i.e. Tuesday morning European time. You may observe the predicted speed and status of the storm at the NOAA website.

I understand the sentiments behind the caution. On the other hand, I understand the skeptics much better. Many people clearly remember an isomorphic hysteria before the landing of Hurricane Irene in August 2011 which turned out to be a non-event. I remember a hurricane sometime around 2005 which was announced to land in New England ? but the outcome could have been summarized by the sentence "It is raining in Boston".

Webcam: Try the rainy before-the-storm business-as-usual at The Times Square, other NYC places (sorry, the website may be overloaded)
The media are helping to preserve a certain kind of group think, a nearly religious admiration for the hurricane and its overwhelming power. I surely have the feeling that those people who refuse to evacuate their homes are considered heretics. They are not allowed to coherently describe their position in the media. But they have a rather good basis for their position, too.

Is this hurricane unprecedented? Well, it's a hurricane that comes late in the season so it may bring snow, too. (Some sources talk about an unprecedented interplay between a hurricane and some Arctic air, and so on, but they haven't really done research whether this interplay is unprecedented, either.) Also, it will manage to land in New Jersey which is pretty far from the equator and the most typical places where hurricanes land if they land at all. Also, this hurricane is targeting New Jersey, nearby places, and perhaps New York. The City is even more inhabited than New Orleans and the proper targeting is what matters for the relevance of a hurricane, indeed.

However, none of these features is really unprecedented.

Sorry, this was the Twitter #Sandy real-time timeline brought to you by TRF. I hope that we haven't lost you.

Even when you restrict your attention to hurricanes affecting New Jersey, you may find many stories in the book linked at the top or in this summary. The web page offers you 21 hurricanes between 1821 and 2011 that affected New Jersey. Irene 2011 was a hurricane that landed in New Jersey ? still, most people already forgot whether it was lethal or not ? but it wasn't the first hurricane with this "citizenship". On September 16th, 1903, a borderline hurricane landed near Atlantic City. Its main effect could be summarized as four inches of rainfall. Some significant hurricanes affected New Jersey in 1821, 1878, 1889, the history is quite nontrivial.

And I have focused on proud New Jersey hurricanes. If we looked elsewhere, we could enumerate tons of other hurricanes, such as the 1960 Hurricane Donna that has improved Manhattan in this way:

What about late-season hurricanes in New Jersey? Sandy must be the first one, right? Well, Hurricane Hazel landed on October 15th, 1954. And you may find much later ones. On December 2nd and 3rd, 1925, a hurricane brought 70 mph winds to Atlantic City. So calling Sandy "unprecedented" means to be ignorant about the history, sometimes very recent history. There's nothing unprecedented about hurricanes landing in New Jersey, not even about the subset that lands in October.

The journalists like to hype things because it brings them profit. Every time the end of the world arrives on the following morning, lots of newspapers are sold. But maybe they also partly want to "help the nation" and by making the stories more dramatic, they make the people more disciplined. I have some understanding for all these things. But I would be much happier to see something different as well ? journalists as impartial messengers who actually describe what is happening, how people respond, and what their reasons are. A large fraction of the citizens are skeptical about the "catastrophic predictions" and many of them have decided not to evacuate their homes for reasons that are often rather sound. It would be nice if the journalists sometimes behaved as journalists in a free society ? which means journalists who report and allow the readers and viewers to decide ? and they were not trying to pretend that all these people are uneducated hacks and criminals and that the journalists' main holy duty is to strengthen the influence of the "authorities".

A hurricane lands somewhere in the U.S. almost every year and while it's good when the public cooperates with its representatives, it's simply unreasonable to consider all such situations "exceptional states of war" equivalent to "martial law" because we would be living under such "martial law" most of our lives (hurricanes are not the only reasons that may spark such "exceptional" measures).

I am not claiming that Sandy must turn out to be another non-event; I don't really know. The wind are strong enough so that you don't want to walk in the middle of your town. But it's rather plausible that it will be another non-event and it's wrong for the society to pretend it is not plausible, not even if this game is supposed to help a "good cause".

Know details before choosing reverse mortgage

Know details before choosing reverse mortgage

NEW YORK (10/30/12)--A reverse mortgage might sound like the perfect answer if you're looking for ways to cover retirement expenses.? If you're considering this option, proceed with caution (The New York Times Oct. 14).
?
A reverse mortgage allows homeowners age 62 and older to borrow money against the value of their homes and not repay it until the house is no longer their primary residence, they move out, or die. It lets a homeowner convert some home equity into cash without having to sell the house or pay additional monthly bills. Reverse mortgage proceeds are not taxable, and generally will not affect your Medicare or Social Security benefits. You retain the title to your home.
?
Unfortunately, new cases of reverse mortgage abuse by some small mortgage brokers, including some former subprime lenders, are growing.
?
If you're considering a reverse mortgage, think about these warnings from the Federal Trade Commission:

 • Beware of sales pitches. Once sellers know you're interested in a reverse mortgage, some will try to pressure you to buy additional financial products, such as long-term care insurance or annuities. If you're interested in these products, take the time to comparison shop. You'll have to maintain adequate homeowners insurance, but you don't have to buy additional products to qualify for a reverse mortgage. Other sellers may offer home improvement services, and then suggest that a reverse mortgage would be an easy way to pay for them. If cost or features of a reverse mortgage are confusing, or if you're feeling pressure to buy, walk away from the seller or lender and take your business elsewhere.
 • Know the features. Because you retain the title, you're responsible for property taxes, insurance, utilities and maintenance. If you don't take care of them, the mortgage can become due and payable. Reverse mortgages can use up all or some of the equity in your home and leave few assets for you or your heirs.
 • Know tax consequences. Reverse-mortgage interest is not deductible until you pay the loan off in part or in full.
 • Remember the right of rescission. You generally have three calendar days to change your mind and cancel the loan. This process should be explained at the loan closing. Get details from your lender.
 • Use a lender you can trust. If you aren't comfortable with a prospective lender, walk away. A good place to start is with your credit union. The professionals there will be straightforward about reverse-mortgage details. If your credit union doesn't offer them, the staff can refer you to another credit union or other reputable lender.

Livescribe outs Sky WiFi Smartpen for 160, lets you record written notes and audio right to Evernote

The Pulse pen couldn't do it. The more recent Echo couldn't manage it either. But sending notes and linked audio wirelessly is what Livescribe's latest digital pen is all about. Branded the Sky WiFi Smartpen, it works with proprietary physical notebooks to preserve your handwritten notes and linked audio files on a minimum of 2GB of onboard storage, and then it sends them directly to your Evernote account via WiFi -- from where you can access them on pretty much any PC, tablet or smartphone. If you're wondering a how the pen selects the right network and enters a password, then it's actually pretty straightforward: Livescribe's new stationery is printed with connection buttons that, in conjunction with the OLED display on the pen itself, guide you through the procedure in a few seconds. The latest notebooks also have buttons for sending your captured thoughts to Google Drive, Dropbox and Facebook, although those services won't be activated until early next year.

The basic 2GB Sky pen will arrive in stores on November 1st, priced substantially higher than its predecessor, the Echo (which will be phased out at the end of next year). The new base model will cost $170, with 4GB and 8GB varieties priced at $200 and $250. Arguably, the reliance on wireless cloud storage means that the amount of onboard memory isn't so important any more, but if you do decide to opt for the most expensive model then you'll also get a year's subscription to Evernote Premium, which is worth $45. There's a short explanatory video after the break, and as you'll see from the gallery below we've already got the Sky pen in our clutches, so expect a full review in short order.

Meet SnagFilms Filmmakers: Can We Govern Ourselves? New Doc ...

Despite numerous countries fighting for their freedoms, there are many entities today that exemplify autonomy. British documentarian Ivo Gormley's new documentary "Us Now" explores various real examples of self-government around the globe. The film is available to view now on SnagFilms (and below).

What it's really about: "In a world in which information is like air, what happens to power? 'Us Now' is a documentary film project about the power of mass collaboration, government and the Internet. It is a description of a world going through the greatest social change since the invention of the printing press. 'Us Now' tells the stories of online networks that are challenging the existing notion of hierarchy. For the first time, it brings together the fore-most thinkers in the field of collaborative governance to describe the future of government. 'Us Now' takes a look at how the internet could allow us to do away with politicians and run the government ourselves. It tells the stories of the online networks whose radical self-organising structures threaten to change the fabric of government for ever. If distributed networks of people can run complex organisations such as football clubs, what else can they do? 'Us Now' follows the fate of Ebbsfleet United; a football club owned and run by its fans, Zopa; a bank in which everyone is the manager,?and Couch surfing; a vast online network whose members share their homes with strangers. The founding principals of these projects; transparancy, self-selection, open-participation, are coming closer and closer to the mainstream of our social and political lives. 'Us Now' describes this transition and confronts politicians George Osborne and Ed Milliband with the possibilities for collaborative government as described by Don Tapscott and Clay Shirky amongst others.

On the influence of anthropology: "I studied anthropology and always took photos. So travelling around and documenting things was always what I did, I started filming things with my dad's video camera as soon as I could and

"Many films are polemics or about how everything's going wrong in the world. Hopefully this is a credible argument for how we could all lead more fulfilling lives."

started editing things together when I was about 17. In those days we could only fit about 10mins of SD footage on the computer. But it felt amazingly exciting to be able to manipulate the footage and then spit it back out on to DV tape. I like being able to go to a place explore it for the first time with the video camera, the camera almost justifying your strange questions and presence in some situations, and then to be able to have a document of it that you can show the rest of the world."

What inspired you to make this film? "I felt like I was from a generation that was taught about how socialism had failed, but was witnessing the failure of global capitalism to allocate resources effectively. It seemed there was no credible ideology available to me. The first time I saw Wikipedia I was utterly amazed. It seemed to me to be proof of human's ability to collaborate through disagreement, across geographical boundaries, without financial incentive and without a rigid hierarchy. It seemed like we weren't using this technology, or anything vaguely similar in the most powerful structures that govern our lives. I wanted to explore this."

His outside influences: "We tried to look at big films about ideas: Adam Curtis has been influential on me structurally rather than stylistically. We watched lots of films that had Philip Glass soundtracks and said important things with text on screen. Some of it rubbed off and with some of it we tried to do our own thing."

On the challenge of the idea of the film: "This was essentially a film about power structures, these are essentially invisible, so it was hard to work out how to film them in the way that wasn't really boring. We got really lucky with the football team and happened to film one of the most amazing matches I've ever seen."

What do you think SnagFilms audiences will respond to most in your movie? "Hopefully the sense of optimism. Many films are polemics or about how everything's going wrong in the world. Hopefully this is a credible argument for how we could all lead more fulfilling lives."

What's Next: "I'm making a film about the Kalash, a tribe of about 3000 who live in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan. They play a game of hockey with 200 people on a team and a 5 kilometre pitch. The losers sacrifice oxen and the winners become king. It's a fascinating and beautiful place going through a lot of change. I'm excited about getting the film out there."

COLUMN: Adler ? Doctors should drop the sugar tax idea ? Lilley's ...

by Charles Adler

Ontario doctors have launched an attack this week. And no, it?s not about health-care reform. Not about wait lists or rationing services. Not about death boards or meddling bureaucracy.

This week, the Ontario Medical Association declared a ?war on obesity.? And who are the enemies in this war? Well, the people of Ontario, and their freedom to decide what they eat.

How are they fighting this war? Well, they have a new ad campaign, featuring graphic warnings to be placed on food items that doctors don?t like. Just as cigarette packages now feature disturbing images and warning logos to deter people from making bad choices, Ontario doctors want warnings on high-calorie, low-nutritional value foods in an attempt to fight obesity.

And they?re not stopping there. They are lobbying the government for higher taxes on ?bad? foods and lower taxes on ?good? food. They?re calling for restricted sales of junk food and sugary drinks.

Doctors are waging this campaign because they are experts and want people to live healthier lives. Doesn?t sound so bad, right?

The problem is their self-righteous scheme takes away individual choice and freedom. What we eat is the most basic of freedoms. And this campaign aims right at the heart of this basic right.

People have choices and must make decisions. Sometimes these decisions are tough. Sometimes people make bad choices. Choices that are not optimal, for themselves or the public good. But they must live with the consequences of their actions. Taking away this freedom to choose makes us a little more complacent, a little more docile and a little less free.

I?m sure the doctors don?t see it this way. They look at the costs. The OMA estimates that extra health-care costs attributed to obesity cost taxpayers up to $2.5 billion a year in Ontario.

That?s the basic problem with having government-owned health care. Since we all pay into the system, we all pay for the bad choices of others. That?s the problem with socialism. The government takes care of our health and our wellness, they own a piece of us and can make these kinds of authoritarian decisions. Decisions about what we can and cannot do with our own bodies.

On a practical level, this initiative falls flat. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation points out that there were no peer-review papers and no real-world examples where food taxes have changed behaviour. In fact, they point to a D.C. think-tank which found that a 20-cent tax on a 75-cent soft drink resulted in the Body Mass Index of an obese person decline from 40 to 39.98.

Denmark tried a ?junk food tax? in 2001. The result? Disastrous economic consequences.

Food manufacturers fled, jobs were shipped across the border, and no positive health outcomes were measured. It?s just not worth it. Yes, health is important. Families should try to teach their children about nutrition and good health. Social campaigns and ads encouraging people to exercise and eat vegetables are great. Athletes and Olympians are championed, and continue to be our society?s greatest role models.

If the OMA wants to take out private ads, that?s fine. When they get into meddling with laws and taxes, it?s a different story.

Security on high alert on Eid: CCPO | Pakistan Today | Latest news ...

LAHORE?-?Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Aslam Tareen on Thursday said that police officials, equipped with metal detectors, would be deputed at mosques, Imam Barghas and other religious places and complete security would also be provided to people in Lahore on the second and third day of Eid.

More than 8,000 police officials and officers will perform duty to provide foolproof security at mosques and open places where Eid-ul-Azha prayers would be held, he said.

He added that the Lahore police would remain on high alert on Eid-ul-Azha to ensure maintenance of law and order to avoid any possible dangerous activity in the city.

He said, in order to achieve this objective, all divisional SPs, supervisory police officers, SHOs, sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors should be deputed at various sensitive points in the city while patrolling of mobile squad should also be made more efficient and effective.

The CCPO directed to make foolproof arrangements at entry and exit points of the city, important buildings, bus and wagon stands and business centers.

He said officials of police emergency 15 would also remain on high alert to take prompt action on complaints of people.

Sanchez set to take the mound for trailing Tigers

DETROIT (AP) ? Justin Verlander already lost. Doug Fister pitched gamely, but his fine effort wasn't good enough either.

Now, with their World Series hopes slipping away, the Detroit Tigers turn to Anibal Sanchez ? the least physically imposing member of their postseason rotation.

"We need to start over," Sanchez said. "We need to forget what happened in San Francisco. I know we've got the talent. That's why we're here. We've got a pretty good team, so we're going to fight it to the end."

Sanchez was acquired to help the Tigers make the playoffs ? they were in the middle of a tough AL Central race with the Chicago White Sox when he arrived in a deal with Miami shortly before the trade deadline. The right-hander held up his end of the bargain, but now Detroit is playing for even higher stakes, and Saturday night's start in Game 3 of the World Series against San Francisco might be his most important test yet.

Although he went only 4-6 as a Tiger in the regular season, Sanchez began to pitch better down the stretch. That carried over into the postseason, where he's 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA.

The last time Sanchez pitched, he shut out the New York Yankees for seven innings in Game 2 of the AL championship series. That's the type of performance the Tigers were hoping for when they traded top pitching prospect Jacob Turner to the Marlins and acquired Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante.

"I had seen him pitch on TV and stuff, but I didn't really know the young man," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "Once he got in his comfort zone, I think he's done absolutely very, very well. He's a very, very good pitcher."

The 6-foot Sanchez is 5 inches shorter than Verlander and 8 inches shorter than Fister. He was shaky after first joining the Tigers, but he posted a 2.43 ERA in his final six regular-season starts.

"I know I've got pretty bad starts in the beginning of my trade," Sanchez said. "I didn't know too much, the hitters, but after that I make my adjustment."

The trade for Sanchez was Detroit's last big move of the season. The Tigers were more than willing to trade a potential future star to acquire two players who could help them compete for a World Series title this year.

Detroit's starting rotation was marvelous against Oakland in the division series and the Yankees in the ALCS. But the Tigers were stung in the World Series opener by the Giants, losing 8-3 when Pablo Sandoval hit three home runs in a game Verlander started.

In Game 2, Fister took a line drive off his head but still managed to pitch into the seventh inning. San Francisco won 2-0.

Right-hander Max Scherzer looked like Detroit's best pitcher at times during the second half of the season, but his throwing shoulder acted up in September, so he's been slotted for Game 4 during the postseason, starting once per series.

So Sanchez is in line to pitch Saturday, with the season seemingly on the line and the prospect of a short series hanging over the proceedings.

"He's pitched pretty well against the Giants in the past, and obviously we're saving Scherzer to give him a little more time to keep recouping a little bit," Leyland said. "But Sanchez has really gotten acclimated here in Detroit. I expect him to pitch a good game. The key is we're going to have to get some runs on the board, obviously."

Sanchez shut out the Giants last year and held them to a run in seven innings in an outing this May. But in his most recent start against them ? on May 24 ? he was touched up for five runs.

"He'll throw any pitch at any time. He throws quality strikes," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We've had our tough times against him. He's a good pitcher."

The Tigers faced elimination once this postseason already, when Verlander shut out Oakland in the fifth game of the division series. In fact, Detroit has been staring down the prospect of a disappointing finish seemingly all year. For much of the season, the Tigers were underachievers before they overtook the White Sox in September.

Then they went on their postseason run before encountering one more difficult roadblock.

If they're going to overcome the Giants, they'd better turn this series around soon.

"I think everybody is going to be relaxed," Sanchez said. "We know we are home, we play really good here. We're going to keep doing the same."

Shell's business ethics guidelines are a sham | Royal Dutch Shell ...

John,

THE NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE Spies and Co.

As an ?interested observer? I would make this comment about Shell?s business operations and their unethical business practices. The US Federal government operates under the Federal Acquisition Regulation?s for the purposes of purchasing goods and services. As it happens to be, the US government requires that its providers of goods and services follow ethical business practices.

If it becomes apparent that any company/corporation/individual is not following Federal good business practices as outlined by its ethic guidelines a complaint may be filed against that company. In most instances that complaint will trigger action to bar the offending entity/corporation from doing business with the US government.

If it can be demonstrated that Shell (as a government contractor) is not following, or has not followed good business practices, as outlined by Federal ethics guidelines, I would urge any offended party to file a formal complaint. If the allegations prove to be true Shell could be barred from doing business with the US government, in any form. That would include the acquisition of Federal leases for oil and gas exploration and exploitation purposes.

The following links will provide your readers access to that part of the Federal Acquisition code that deals with business ethics:

Subpart 3.10?Contractor Code of Business Ethics and Conduct

This subpart prescribes policies and procedures for the establishment of contractor codes of business ethics and conduct, and display of ? evidence of a violation of Federal criminal law involving fraud, conflict of interest, bribery, ? (b)(1) Unless the contract is for the acquisition of a commercial item or will be performed ?

Acquisition Policy ? GSA

Oct 9, 2012 ? Acquisition Policy serves as a change-agent to help create a ? Supports and promotes the achievement of federal business goals and ? that the government?s business be conducted under the highest ethical standards.

Needless to say, this would apply to industrial espionage or espionage, or even simple conspiracy to violate both the economic espionage statutes as well as the national security espionage statutes. Conspiracy to do so under Title 18 of US Code is a criminal violation of Federal law.

If your allegations are true, then Shell has deliberately and repeatedly violated Federal business ethics guidelines. That conduct should be reported to the appropriate agencies Inspector General Hotline Office. If criminal misconduct is involved or suspected then the matter should be reported to the FBI or agency law enforcement investigative bureau, i.e., Navy NCIS, DoD DCIS, Air Force OSI, Army CID, etc. All complaints filed with the HOTLINE offices are confidential and individuals are protected under Federal ?whistle blower? statutes.

We all know that Shell?s business ethics guidelines are a sham, but they have been ?established? (on paper if not in reality) because of Federal acquisition requirements and law. Don?t expect Shell to follow them if they think they can get away with violating them.
