Spectacular sunset shuts down summer in Washington, D.C. (PICTURES)

October suffered an identity crisis in its first week, confusing itself with July. The average high October 1 through 6 was 88 degrees. But Monday?s cold front, complemented by gusty downpours, put an abrupt end to the summery wave.

Marking the transition from summer to fall-like weather came an impeccably-timed sunset, casting light on the departing frontal clouds in a blend of stunning yellow, orange, red, magenta, and purple hues.

We received scores of photos capturing this spectacle from around the region and share some of our favorites here. Thanks to all who submitted photos on our Twitter, Facebook and Flickr feeds.

Windows XP End of Life: Chromebooks As a Replacement?

The VAR Guy recently visited his son's high school. During that field trip, our resident blogger noticed several dozen Windows XP systems -- which will face Microsoft's XP end of life deadline on April 8, 2014. Microsoft (MSFT) could win lots of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 business as schools dump older offerings. But then again another big winner could be Google Chromebooks from Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba. Here's why.

Roughly 22 percent of U.S. school districts now run Google Chromebooks, the low-cost, cloud-centric notebooks, according to Business Insider. Admittedly, some of those schools may have only a handful of Chromebooks. But NPD Group, a market research firm, claims Chromebooks represented 3.3 percent of back-to-school system sales.?

At first glance that's a tiny figure compared to the massive Windows market. But consider these variables:

  • Can Microsoft really afford to lose market share and Windows XP upgrade opportunities when the overall PC market has been contracting?
  • Will Chromebooks gain even more momentum since the the cloud-based design eliminates the need for time-consuming desktop upgrades?

Somewhere, Google's channel partners must be smiling. Cloud Sherpas?-- a Top 100 Cloud Services Provider -- has offered and supported Chromebooks for some customers. And K-12 resellers seem to be kicking the Chromebook tires more and more frequently, The VAR Guy has heard during a few private conversations.

The bottom line: Microsoft wants thousands of Windows XP customers -- including schools -- to jump to Windows 8.1 in 2014 or sooner. But some schools are instead making a leap of faith to Google Chromebooks.

How many schools are going that route? The VAR Guy is still searching for answers...

No Marseille Networking Thursday This Month ? Mediterranean ...

We would like to advise members and guests that the Marseille Networking Thursday will not be taking place in October.

The decision to cancel was taken because the date falls in the middle of the October school holidays, a period which historically produces very low turnouts at the MAABN?s regular event.

However, we hope to see you at the ?Tastes of the World? evening at the WTC on October 17 and of course at the November Networking Thursday at la Bo?te. (Or drop in at the Aix Networking Tuesday on October 8th?)

Thanks for your understanding.

Miss Philippines wins Miss World in Indonesia

BALI, Indonesia (AP) ? Miss Philippines, Megan Young, was crowned Miss World on Saturday amid tight security on Indonesia's resort island of Bali, where the contest's final round was moved following protests by Muslim hardliner groups.

"I promise to be the best Miss World ever," Young, 23, said after winning the 63rd annual event, as a large number of Filipino fans who traveled with her celebrated by jumping and waving the country's flag.

Despite threats from the Islamic Defenders Front to disrupt the contest, police said no rallies were staged Saturday. The group has demonstrated for weeks, calling for the government to cancel the pageant because members say it shows too much skin and goes against Islamic teachings.

The 127 contestants vying for the crown were introduced Saturday wearing evening gowns shimmering in sequins, many of them with plunging necklines and slits up the leg. Four candidates dropped out earlier, mainly due to illnesses, said Syafril Nasution, one of the local organizers.

Young, who took the crown from Wenxia Yu of China, the 2012 winner, was born in the United States. When she was 10 she moved to the Philippines, where she has appeared in films and as a television host.

Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, 20, took second place, while Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, 22, came in third.

Miss World organizers had earlier agreed to cut bikinis from the swimsuit competition, replacing them with more conservative sarongs. But pressure continued to mount, and more mainstream groups joined in and called for the show to be banned.

Indonesia's government announced three weeks ago that the final would be moved from the outskirts of the capital, Jakarta, and instead held on the Hindu-dominated resort island of Bali, where earlier rounds were taking place.

The British, Australian and U.S. embassies issued warnings to citizens planning trips to Bali during the competition, saying there could be large-scale protests or even attacks.

Col. R. Umar Faroq, the Director of Vital Security for Bali provincial police, said thousands of security forces had been deployed to secure the final.

But Faroq said that security was tightened along the north coast of East Java to Bali in anticipation of possible protesters from other islands.

"The success in securing the Miss World final will be a benchmark for the police in securing the incoming APEC Summit," Faroq said, referring to the upcoming Asia-Pacific Cooperation summit on Bali to be attended by world leaders, including President Barack Obama, and thousands of delegates.

Miss World is the latest controversy in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, where most follow a moderate form of the religion. However, a small extremist fringe has become louder and more violent in recent years, attacking Christians and other religious minorities, along with anyone else deemed immoral.

Last year, the Islamic Defenders Front forced Lady Gaga to cancel a sold-out show after branding her a "devil worshipper."

In 2002, Bali was the site of suicide bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists. Since then, the government has aggressively pursued militant groups, which in recent years have committed much smaller-scale attacks mainly focused on security personnel.

Opinion: Bill keeps off-reservation casinos out of communities

Artist's rendering of the proposed West Valley Resort. Image from Tohono O'odham Nation

Mayors of cities in Arizona support H.R.1410, a bill that prevents the Tohono O'odham Nation from opening an off-reservation casino:
As mayors of our respective cities, we have pledged to protect the best interests of our communities. We believe that the recent passage of H.R. 1410, the Keeping the Promise Act, by the U.S. House of Representatives is a significant step in the right direction. We urge our Arizona senators to take a leadership role on this issue as it makes its way to the Senate. The Keep the Promise Act is federal legislation introduced by a bipartisan group of Arizona?s congressional representatives that will prohibit additional tribal casinos being built on county islands in cities located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is a topic of grave concern in our respective cities, to the degree that some of us recently passed city resolutions in support of the bill and to publicly express our strong opposition to the construction of tribal casinos in our communities because it is contrary to our cities? best interests.

Ferocity of mall attack stuns Kenyans

Islamist terrorists were still holding dozens of hostages Sunday in Nairobi's upscale Westgate mall. The attack is the worst Kenya has confronted since 1998.

    By Mike Pflanz,?Correspondent / September 22, 2013

Trucks of soldiers from the Kenya Defense Forces arrive after dawn outside the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya Sunday. Islamic extremist gunmen lobbed grenades and fired assault rifles inside Nairobi's top mall Saturday, killing dozens and wounding over a hundred in the attack. Early Sunday morning, 12 hours after the attack began, gunmen remained holed up inside the mall with an unknown number of hostages.

An unknown number of people remained trapped inside the Westgate Shopping Centre in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, as specialist troops with backup from the FBI combed the building trying to corner the attackers.?

Kenya?s government said that 59 people, including several children, had died and 175 had been wounded, according to the latest information available early?Sunday. Those numbers are expected to rise.?

The attack, apparently targeting non-Muslims and Westerners who frequent the mall, shocked many in Kenya for its ferocity, but there had been warnings that it could happen.?

Somalia?s Al Shabab Islamists said their forces were responsible and the assault was in revenge for Kenya?s Army offensive against them in Somalia, where they have been pushed out of most major towns in the past two years.?

There had been repeated ?threat alerts? of potential attacks targeting the shopping center, but Al Shabab?s efforts in Kenya so far were limited to single grenades lobbed at bus-stop queues or into illegal pubs.?

By contrast, Saturday?s attack was the worst terror strike on the country since the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, in which 212 people died.?

Several US citizens were injured or caught up in the assault on the mall, popular with expatriates and middle-class Kenyans, where outlets include jewelry shops, cafes, a sushi bar, and a multiscreen cinema.?

More than 1,000 people had been rescued by?Sunday, according to Joseph Ole Lenku, Kenya?s interior secretary.?

But as the siege entered its second day, the Kenya Red Cross was preparing for the worst with a makeshift triage center set up in a Hindu temple complex within sight of the mall.?

?If they were shot or injured at the start of this thing, unless they self-administered professionally, there will be very serious loss of blood by now,? said Venant Ndighila, head of the Red Cross?s emergency response team.?

Al Shabab said via its Twitter account that its gunmen, believed to number between 10 and 15, were not defeated, and it ruled out negotiation.?

?The Mujahideen are still firmly in control of the situation inside #Westgate Mall,? their spokesman tweeted. ?Negotiation is out of the question.??

Reports from some of the people who managed to escape in the initial outbreak of gunfire reported a ?scene of horror? inside the four-storey building, which was hosting a cooking competition for children on its roof when the attack began.?

?I hid under a car with my daughters, and I saw the men line up maybe 40 people and ask them who was Muslim, and if they were, to prove it by saying the name of the prophet?s mother. Those who got it wrong were shot,? said Charles Karani, an IT engineer.

?There was blood everywhere. Two ladies under the car with me had gunshot wounds on their legs.

?Another Indian gentlemen was hit on the face by a bullet but he seemed not to be gravely hurt. Other people for sure are dead. I saw four people lying not moving.

?A grenade was thrown and it rolled near us. My daughter said: 'Papa, there?s a grenade? ? but thank God it didn?t go off and I kicked it away.?

A New York City teacher who moved to Kenya only a month ago and who escaped unharmed after two hours trapped in the building said it was ?so, so horrible.?

?I watched 9/11 from my apartment window, I?ve been in Cairo, and this is up there with that,? she said, giving her name only as Elizabeth.?

?There was so much shooting. I hid under a bed in a department store with a Kenyan lady. We both escaped when the police said it was clear to go.?

Kenyan citizens rallied to give blood to help the injured at a series of ?donor drives? at hospitals around Nairobi. Church services?Sunday?morning were dominated by prayers for the hostages, and for the dead and injured.?

Garden club to sponsor fairy village at Apple Harvest Festival

    By Ed Harris
    Editor
The Orchard Valley Garden Club will once again host a fairy village on the ground of the Barnes Museum during the Apple Harvest Festival.
This is the second year the garden club has sponsored the village and visitors will be given fairy bracelets to warn the fairies of their entrance and the opportunity to make fairy wands, wizard hats and fairy houses, among other items. Various fairy themed items will also be for sale and a fairy house and two baskets will be raffled off.
The activities, geared for a younger audience, will take place Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fairy houses, designed by members of the garden club, will be available for viewing all weekend.
?This year we intend to set up a station in the barn where materials will be available if children would like to make their own fairy houses,? said Marge Muzycka, president of the Orchard Valley Garden Club.??If they like they can gather up the materials they are interested in and take them home with them as making a fairy house can be somewhat time consuming depending on how involved or complicated the design is.?
All money raised through the raffles or from the sale of the fairy related items will be donated to the Barnes Museum.

Will This Relationship Last? Take the Quiz! - Science of Relationships

Are you dating someone and finding yourself wondering, ?Where is this going?? You can easily measure your current level of commitment to the relationship to make an educated guess about whether you guys will stay together. It?s not magic. It?s not a gimmick. It?s just statistics. Give it a try: Take our?relationship quiz.?(I recommend you take the quiz before reading further so that you can give your natural responses.)

Click here to take the quiz >>

Editors' note: This quiz is part of an informal project on great relationships conducted?by contributor?
Melissa Schneider, LMSW,?and is not supervised or conducted by ScienceOfRelationships.com,
other contributors, or the academic institutions affliliated with other contributors.

I think we can all agree that the word ?Commitment? gets tossed around a lot. Will he commit? She has commitment issues...We all say it, but what does commitment really mean? To some, it means not cheating, and for others, it means dating exclusively or maintaining a marriage. For most of us, commitment involves some sort of obligation or promise to the other person.

But to relationship researchers,?commitment is a specific animal with three major organs: relationship satisfaction, quality of alternatives, and investments.1 ?Relationship satisfaction? is fairly self-explanatory?it means how satisfied you are with your overall relationship. Your "alternatives" refer to the other people you could potentially become involved with if your current relationship ended. Lastly, your "investments" are the things you put into a relationship, like time, effort, money, property, or emotional energy. Researchers have refined and tweaked this definition of commitment since the 1980s, and it has become one of the single most-studied aspects of romantic relationships.2?More importantly for us, this flurry of empirical inquiry means we know a lot about the interaction between commitment and a person?s future decision to stay or break up. Essentially, it works like this:

    Commitment?s Predictive Powers

Your commitment score is not a perfect crystal ball, but it is a good place to start if you want to predict your relationship?s future. Commitment is one of the best markers of who will break up and who will stay together in the future, anywhere from three months to a year or two later.3?It is also a great way to assess your relationship because unlike other factors, such as how often you fight or how much support you get from your social circle, commitment?s powers appear to work equally for men and women. Also, the relationship between commitment and your future status is also generally immune to your ethnicity, sexual orientation, or how long you?ve been with your partner.

This means that you can measure your commitment at any point in the dating or relationship process and learn something useful about the future. But how accurate a prediction can you make? In one study that followed more than 1,700 people for five months, commitment scores collected at the start of the study explained 22% of the difference between the people who stayed together and the people who broke up after the five months. In normal-speak, this number means there is a moderate connection between commitment and staying together in the future. While a lot of other factors contribute to keeping a couple together, we can confidently say that people?s current commitment to their relationship is an important piece of their future decision to stay with their partner or move on.

Commitment would probably be an even more accurate predictor of your relationship?s future status if it weren?t for one thing: Committed people sometimes get dumped. It sucks but it?s true. If your partner is less committed than you are, he or she might break up with you, rendering your own commitment a much less relevant factor in your future break-up. If your partner is willing, perhaps you can both take today?s relationship quiz and compare your scores. If you have similar scores, then great. If your commitment levels vary, you might want to talk about what is causing this difference. One study of college students found that people who would initiate a breakup with their partner in the next five months had lower commitment levels than people who would still be dating their partner at the end of that time.4?A mismatch in your commitment levels doesn?t have to be cause for panic, but it could be an important thing to discuss together.

Moreover, commitment is not 100% accurate because committed people might leave for other reasons. If you find out your partner is cheating, for instance, or if your parents strongly disapprove of your partner, or if you have to move to China and your partner insists on keeping a position in the state of Wyoming, such factors could prompt a non-commitment-related breakup.

All in all, your commitment score is a significant puzzle piece when you want to know if your relationship will last. Understanding your own commitment will give you a unique perspective on yourself and your relationship. So, go on, click here to find out how committed you are!

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Union City man set eight fires the last four years at two Manhattan hotels where he worked as a security officer in order to temporarily close the businesses and kick back in a comped room with free alcohol, the FDNY said today.

Mariano Barbosa, Jr., 30, was arrested by city fire marshals yesterday and charged him with setting the fires from February 2009 to September 2013 at the Yotel Hotel on 10th Avenue near Times Square and the Soho Grand Hotel on West Broadway.

Barbosa most recently worked as director of security at the Yotel after leaving his job as a security officer at the Soho Grand.

?It?s disturbing that an individual charged with the safety of hotel occupants would callously endanger their lives ? and the lives of firefighters ? for personal gain,? said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano. ?I commend the marshals for their extensive investigative work that led to this arrest.?

Authorities said Barbosa deliberately set the garbage fires in hallways, stairwells and in front of exit doors late at night or early in the morning to keep occupants from getting out and firefighters from getting in. Each fire was extinguished quickly, they said.

Barbosa?s goal, they said, was to get the hotels to close so that he could have a working vacation of sorts.

Terry Fox to be added to Canada's Walk of Fame on Saturday

Port Coquitlam hero Terry Fox will be one of eight Canadians inducted into the country?s Walk of Fame tomorrow.

The unveiling Saturday will happen at the corner of Yonge and Queen streets in Toronto before Rolly and Darrell Fox ? Terry?s father and brother ? and Doug Alward and Bill Vigars.

Alward was Terry?s best friend at PoCo high school and joined him on his Marathon of Hope in 1980; Vigars was the Canadian Cancer Society representative who promoted Terry?s epic cross-country journey to raise money for cancer research. It will be the first time in more than 30 years that Darrell Fox, who was also part of the Marathon of Hope, Alward and Vigars have been together, according to the Terry Fox Foundation.

The other 2013 Walk of Fame inductees are Bob Ezrin (music producer); Victor Garber (actor); Craig and Marc Kielburger (human rights activists); the late Oscar Peterson (musician); Christine Sinclair (soccer captain); and Alan Thicke (actor).

The 15th anniversary of the Canadian Walk of Fame awards show will air on Oct. 27 and will feature a star-studded cast, including Mike Myers, Carly Rae Jepsen and Martin Short.

Fragmented opposition, Syrian government both hamper aid: agencies

    By Stephanie Nebehay

GENEVA (Reuters) - Aid workers are having to negotiate with an increasing number of rebel sub-factions to organize delivery of aid to Syrian civilians, while the government continues to deny access to many areas, severely hampering their work, agencies said on Friday.

Bringing supplies from the capital to the divided northern city of Aleppo - a distance of 355 kms - is slow and fraught, said Pierre Kraehenbuehl, director of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) operations worldwide.

"When colleagues of ours travel from Damascus to Aleppo it is something between 50 and 60 checkpoints on the way. This is what you have to deal with," he told a news conference in Geneva.

"Therefore it multiplies the number of people that you need to talk to on the ground, from a variety of groups, everything from organized armed forces across to loosely structured non-state groups, rebel groups, but also of course the criminal actors," he said.

"... there is very strong fragmentation on the opposition side and you have multiplicity of groups, sometimes even disagreement within the same group, so that you have to negotiate with several factions within the same opposition group."

The World Food Programme, which is trying to bring rations to three million Syrians a month, said armed groups in the northeast have blocked roads and more areas of Damascus and the countryside around the city are inaccessible due to fighting.

Hundreds of rebels have pledged allegiance to al Qaeda-affiliated forces in northern and eastern Syria, activists and Islamist sources said on Friday, strengthening the group's control in the region.

Entire units have joined the small but powerful al Qaeda-linked groups - the Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) - in recent days, according to the sources inside Syria.

The ICRC, an independent humanitarian agency, is in contact with all groups and is able to work in some opposition- and government-held areas of Aleppo, Kraehenbuehl said.

    CHALLENGES

"There is no doubt whether in the north or other regions of the country where the opposition groups are strongly present it is the multiplicity of groups that makes the dialogue challenging," he said.

"Because to understand who is who, who to talk to, who can provide you guarantees that when your convoy goes through a given region that it is respected, this is the challenge."

The government of President Bashar al-Assad has had "a rather constraining and limiting attitude" toward aid workers, since the fighting began in early 2011, Kraehenbuehl said.

Syrian officials, invoking security concerns, this month again refused a greenlight for access the old city of Homs, where several thousand people are believed to have been stranded for months, he said.

"The issue of our access to Homs old city is currently unresolved, despite agreements that we had been able to negotiate this time locally with all actors, there was a central red light that was given," he said. "It's not the only place."

WFP has recorded nearly 50 incidents of theft of supplies or confiscation of food trucks by armed groups this year, said the U.N. agency's spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs.

A WFP warehouse in the countryside outside Damascus caught fire this week after being hit by three mortar bombs, she said.

"We call upon all parties of the conflict to allow the safe passage of food to the families that live month to month on WFP's food rations," Byrs told a news briefing.

Church of Scotland Considers No Longer Officiating Marriages

The Church of Scotland is weighing no longer performing marriage ceremonies over concerns that the?country?s impending same-sex marriage legislation will invite lawsuits against the Church. While the legislation would include protections for religious groups who choose not to perform same-sex marriage, members of the church, or the Kirk, warned those protections were not ?robust enough to protect those who in conscience will not want to conduct such ceremonies.?

?This Bill constitutes the most serious threat to religious liberty in Scotland in living memory,? a church spokesman said. ?Churches and religious bodies will be vulnerable to challenge and legal attack. Forcing society to accept same-sex marriage in the face of majority opposition is unnecessary, unwanted, and undemocratic.?

While it has not made any official decisions to stop performing ceremonies, among possible reforms, the Kirk has said it may offer alternative options such as a church blessing afterwards, according to the BBC. It has also asked the government to explore the possibility of no longer recognizing ministers and other religious officials as ?civil registrars? in regards to marriage.

?It gives us considerable problems internally; we?re deeply concerned about the threat externally,? a reverend with the church said.

Tupac Shakur biopic to be filmed in 2014

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A new biopic on slain rapper Tupac Shakur is coming.

Morgan Creek Productions and Emmett/Furla Films announced in a Thursday news release they are in final negotiations to partner on the production of "Tupac." The picture will begin filming next year in Atlanta.

Gunned down in 1996 in Las Vegas, Shakur's murder has not been solved. He remains a towering figure in rap music, the subject of Elvis-like conspiracy theories and one of two slain symbols with Biggie Smalls of the East Coast-West Coast beef that ruled rap for a time in the 1990s.

The film will be executive produced by Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur.

The news release says the film will center on Shakur's life, but makes no mention of who will star as the rapper or who will direct.

Report heaps new criticism on Texas death penalty

    by PAUL J. WEBER

    WFAA

Posted on September 18, 2013 at 3:35 PM

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? A man who spent 18 years on death row in Texas before being exonerated by DNA evidence joined former Gov. Mark White on Wednesday in presenting a report that calls for lawmakers to pursue reforms in the nation's most active death penalty state.

The new report from the American Bar Association urges the state to strengthen standards for eyewitness identification and require video recordings of suspect interrogations. The 500-page report also recommends reducing barriers to post-conviction DNA testing.

White, who served as governor from 1983 to 1987, oversaw 19 executions during his term. He helped unveil the report along with Anthony Graves, who was wrongfully convicted in the slayings of six family members.

"It reminds us that ultimately the death penalty becomes a very, very personal situation," White said.

Texas executed its 500th inmate this summer. It has accounted for nearly 40 percent of the more than 1,300 executions carried out since 1977, when a Utah inmate became the first U.S. prisoner executed following the Supreme Court's clarification of death penalty laws. Virginia is a distant second, nearly 400 executions behind.

In the 1990s, the American Bar Association called for a national moratorium on capital punishment. But authors of the report Wednesday said their findings do not take a position on whether the death penalty should be outlawed.

Eleven inmates have already been executed this year in Texas, and at least seven more are scheduled to die in the coming months. That includes the scheduled execution Thursday of Robert Gene Garza, who was put on death row at the age of 20 after being convicted of participating in a deadly gang ambush in the Rio Grande Valley.

Another execution is scheduled for next week.

The report does praise the state for making some "significant improvements" in capital punishment cases in recent years. The most well-known is the Michael Morton Act, named in honor of a Texas man who spent 25 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. The law signed by Gov. Rick Perry mandates that prosecutors statewide share case files that can help the defense.

But the report asks that the state do even more for inmates post-conviction. Among the recommendations are requiring the state Board of Pardons and Paroles to conduct public hearings in any case in which clemency is sought.

Dudley Sharp, a vocal death penalty advocate in Texas and resource director for the reform advocacy group Justice for All, said he had not reviewed the entire report. He criticized one recommendation to review alleged geographic disparities in death-sentence cases as "intellectually dishonest," arguing that it makes sense that the majority of capital cases would come from the state's highest-populated areas.

But Sharp said he had no issue with strengthening some rules, such as witness identifications, so long as lawmakers write them properly.

"It really depends on how it's worded. If you don't do it like the statute says, you're never going to get a case to stick," Sharp said. "The recommendations are fine. It's how they draw it up is the real problem."

Fitness Isn't All Weights and Cardio: Remember Your Work in the ...

    September 17th, 2013

No matter how hard you?ve been working to bring those chiseled abs to the surface, there?s one factor that may be working against you without you even knowing. When you get down to basics, it becomes a matter of calories in vs. calories out, but where you?re getting your calories from matters. No matter whether you prefer to use a smooth treadmill or an elliptical to get your exercise in, diet is something you should be paying very close attention to in order to properly fuel your workouts.

We?ve written extensively about how diet affects your fitness efforts, but we wanted to talk about a commonly-misunderstood element that frustrates millions who are trying to achieve their fitness and weight loss goals. Yes, you should make sure that your net calories are in line, but you should also understand that the source of your calories is very important. You can?t expect optimal results if you?re using more calories than you eat, if all you eat are corn chips. There are also a lot of crazy fad diets out there that would have you eating only cabbage soup or subsisting on spicy lemonade, but these aren?t sustainable nutrition systems for people who want to obtain lifelong fitness and health.

So let?s take a look at this very important but often misunderstood concept: feeding yourself for working out. First of all, you need to remember that not everyone?s needs are the same. Dietary and health restrictions, workout goals, types of exercise, the fitness equipment you use?these all affect your body?s needs, so what works for someone else (famous or not) won?t necessarily yield the same results for you. A long distance runner?s diet and that of a weight lifter won?t ever be the same because the needs they must meet are so different.

If you?re doing intense exercise like cross training or endurance running, then you should be planning your diet carefully (ideally with the help of a personal trainer or doctor.) ?Don?t sabotage your hard work with a poor understanding of workout nutrition!

Alvarez teacher brings stories of South Africa

    Click photo to enlarge

Manuel Lopez speaks about the South African, American and and Confederate flags during his U.S Government class at Everett Alvarez High School.

The photographs of South Africa projected on the screen show a stark reality: roads without pavement, tiny huts hardly suitable for human habitation, long lines to get basic necessities like bread.

But there's one that makes Everett Alvarez High School seniors groan: a taxidermic collection mounted on a wall that includes the head of a giraffe, kudus and other antelopes with spectacular antlers.

As part of a fellowship this summer, social studies teacher Manuel Lopez was allowed access to the property of a wealthy landowner in South Africa. Besides collecting trophies for his wall, the landowner raises Merino sheep for their famed wool.

In five weeks of study, Lopez covered a lot of terrain. He attended 18 lectures on the art, politics and history of the nation. He visited poor and affluent communities. He talked to activist survivors of the anti-Apartheid movement, people who were tortured for fighting against the regime.

And in the highlight of his trip, he visited the cell on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars.

"It's amazing he did not have hatred for his captors," Lopez said.

Lopez and 24 other educators from the United States earned the South African trip as part of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Earning the fellowships is not easy. In the last five competitions, the program received an average of 1,261 applications per year, with only about 88 awards given per year ? a 7 percent funding ratio.

But Lopez seems to have gotten the hang of fellowships. In the last 13 years, he has participated in eight international programs and three in the United States, all fully or partially funded through grants.

He said the experiences enrich his daily work in the classroom.

"I wish more of my colleagues applied for these," he said.

Born in Mexico, Lopez came to the United States when he was 5. He arrived in Chualar and attended Alisal High School in Salinas before going to Bard College in New York and earning a master's degree at Brown University. He earned a second master's at San Jose State University for his administrators credential. He also coaches soccer after he's done with the day of instruction.

Lopez has bounced between teacher and administrator several times in his 22 years as an educator.

His travels inform his lectures, he said. As lawmakers returned to the U.S. Capitol last week after a five-week recess, Lopez lectured about South Africa and its government.

It's hard these days for the African nation. Though its economy is the largest and most developed in Africa, there is 25 percent unemployment and many people live on the equivalent of $1.25 a day. Although it's

multicultural, recent immigrants from poorer neighboring countries have caused significant stress on the local population, leading to much publicized riots in 2008.

As part of his fellowship, Lopez proposed to study South Africa in relation to the 2010 World Cup in soccer. How had the sporting event transformed the nation? Were its benefits widespread? Who has access now to the stadiums that were built?

"There are so many people who are upset about the debt the country now owes," Lopez said, adding that the stadiums built for the occasion are not receiving enough revenue to cover their expenses.

"To pay off that debt, many social programs are at risk," he said.

3 essentials for weight loss success

weight loss success Follow Me on Pinterest If you?re doing something?anything?to improve your health and fitness this year, I salute you. It?s so easy to let ourselves slide . . . to get really good at not looking below the neck when we see ourselves in the mirror.

Getting back in shape isn?t easy, despite the pixie-dust solutions plenty of people want to sell you. Which is why I want to make sure that your hard work pays off and gets you the results you want.

So here are my three best (and dead simple) tips to ensure success:

    1. Choose a weight loss diet that provides enough calories and protein

You might think that the whole point of any diet is to slash calories to the bone in order to shed fat fast. But it doesn?t work that way.

Yes, you have to reduce calories in order to burn fat. But there?s a sweet spot you need to find. Cut too few calories, and your fat loss will be agonizingly slow. (Actually not a bad thing if you are quite patient.)

Cut too many, and the consequences to your metabolism are devastating. (A good chunk of my brand-new free webinar is devoted to this very point. Go to the bottom of this post to learn how you can view it.)

And unfortunately, women are much more likely to err on the side of eating too little.

Another term for ?very low calorie? diets? Starvation!

What about protein? Women in general tend not to consume enough of this macronutrient, even though it?s essential for making sure that what you lose during a diet is fat rather than muscle tissue.

No, you don?t have to be a big-time carnivore (although it helps). You can also get high-quality protein from dairy products, eggs, and soy and good-quality protein from legumes and other plant foods.

    2. Follow a food plan that teaches you healthy eating habits

Sounds like a no-brainer, but many popular weight loss diets are based on the notion of following a ridiculous and unsustainable way of eating for a limited time.

I?m talking about plans that cut out whole food groups (e.g., carbohydrates or fats), make you drink your meals, involve intermittent fasting, or in other ways force you to eat (or not eat) in a way that nobody can maintain for long.

Here?s what?s wrong with that: the minute you drop the weight (presuming you do), you?re likely to return to the old eating habits that got you into trouble in the first place.

    Why wouldn?t you?

The diet you?ve been following has taught you nothing about how to eat right under normal circumstances?how to make healthy, calorie-controlled choices day after day in a normal food environment.

A good fat-loss plan teaches you new ways of eating that you can maintain for a lifetime: what to choose (most of the time) and in what quantities. During your time on the fat-loss diet, you master new eating skills so that once you?ve gotten to your ideal weight, you can make a seamless transition into maintenance.

    3. Form an exercise habit?don?t use diet alone to get lean

Not long ago I read a research report that said only about 17 percent of dieters were also exercising. Here are three reasons why exercise is truly essential:

It protects your lean mass (i.e., your muscle) while you?re dieting. This matters because the amount of muscle you have helps determine your metabolic rate. Lose muscle, and your metabolism slows down?simple as that.

It burns calories. If you?re exercising?whether by taking a daily walk or working out at a gym?you lose fat more quickly simply because you?re expending energy through movement.

It will help you maintain your fat loss. Very few people who lose weight actually keep it off. There are many reasons (including the fact that they didn?t learn a new way of eating), but one of the biggies is not having an exercise habit.

A couple of U.S. scientists have spent decades studying successful ?losers??people who have lost, on average, more than 50 pounds and kept it off for several years. One of their key strategies is following a daily exercise routine.

Microsoft Looking for Windows Phone 8 'App Star'

Microsoft is looking for the next big app. Redmond today launched a new developer contest that will place the winning app in a primetime U.S. TV ad.

Dubbed Windows Phone Next App Star, the competition is open to Windows Phone developers worldwide, and aims to bring them more visibility and customers.

Anyone who has a Windows Phone app published in at least one country by March 5 can participate. Microsoft will then narrow it down to the top 64 apps. Running in conjunction with the NCAA basketball tournament, Redmond will seed each app into brackets, at which point users will vote for their favorites, until a winner is selected.

"Two apps enter, one app leaves," senior director of Windows Phone apps Todd Brix said in a video about the contest. "Consumers all over the world get to vote and decide who should be the Next App Star. Based on user ratings and Redmond's own quality metrics, each week's field will be narrowed to 32, 16, eight, four, and two, until the grand-prize winner is chosen.

Prizes will be handed out along the way, starting with a Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone and a one-year free Dev Center subscription for everyone who makes it into the top 64.

The last app standing will be featured in a Windows Phone primetime television advertisement sometime in the late spring or early summer, according to Brix.

Last year, Microsoft reached a milestone 75,000 certified Windows Phone 8 apps.

To participate, registered developers can visit the Dev Center to opt in by March 5, and Microsoft will automatically enter into the competition your catalog of published apps. Newcomers or those who want to tweak an existing application must register now and publish before the March cut-off date.

"This isn't just about picking the most popular app in the Store," Brix wrote in a blog post. "Windows Phone Next App Star is about giving developers a shot at being the next big hit. You don't have to be a longtime developer on the Windows Phone platform ? even a newcomer can win fans and win big."

Microsoft helped to introduce its Windows 8 operating system in February by unveiling a handful of new apps to launch with its consumer preview, including PuzzleTouch Jigsaw, Air Soccer, Pew Pew, SigFig Portfolio, and Elements Weather.

Armstrong admits to doping during Winfrey interview -report

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - His fall nearly complete, disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong finally confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs in an interview on Monday with Oprah Winfrey, USA Today reported.

Although American media had widely speculated that Armstrong would admit to cheating in the interview, neither Winfrey nor Armstrong would confirm the report, in which the newspaper cited an anonymous source.

"We are not confirming any specific details regarding the interview at this time," a spokesman for Oprah's network OWN told Reuters.

The report did not say which drugs Armstrong admitted to using, and the American's attorney and his spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Armstrong, 41, has always vehemently denied using performance-enhancing drugs and had never tested positive to a doping test. But the evidence against him has been overwhelming.

Oprah, on Twitter, offered little more herself other than to say Armstrong came prepared for the interview, which will be broadcast on Thursday.

"Just wrapped with @lancearmstrong More than 2 1/2 hours. He came READY," Winfrey tweeted.

But the television host hinted she would provide some more snippets, confirming she would appear on CBS television on Tuesday morning to talk about the interview.

CBS reported Armstrong had indicated he may be willing to testify against others involved in illegal doping and was in talks about repaying part of the taxpayer money he earned during his career.

The unconfirmed reports about his admissions followed Armstrong's apology to the staff of the cancer foundation he had started over difficulties they may have experienced because of the doping controversy.

"He had a private conversation with the staff, who have done the important work of the foundation for many years," said Livestrong Foundation spokeswoman Katherine McLane.

"It was a very sincere and heartfelt expression of regret over any stress that they've suffered over the course of the last few years as a result of the media attention," she said.

Shortly after, Armstrong joined his legal team to meet with Winfrey for an interview described as "no-holds-barred."

The interview was supposed to take place at Armstrong's Texas home but was switched to a hotel in downtown Austin after news crews camped outside his house before dawn.

    SWIFT FALL FROM GRACE

A former cancer survivor who went on to become the greatest cyclist the world has seen, Armstrong's fall from grace has been as swift and spectacular as his rise through the French alps.

Long dogged by accusations he cheated his way to the top, an October report from the U.S. anti-doping body USADA ultimately triggered his rapid slide.

USADA exposed Armstrong as a liar and a cheat, describing him as the ringmaster of the "most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen," involving anabolic steroids, human growth hormone, blood transfusions and other doping.

Former Armstrong teammates at his U.S. Postal and Discovery Channel outfits, where he won his seven successive Tour titles from 1999 to 2005, testified against him as well as admitting to their own wrongdoing.

The mountain of evidence was overwhelming, and when Armstrong decided not to fight the charges against him, his Tour de France victories were quickly nullified. He was banned from cycling for life.

His sponsors, which had remained loyal to him, began deserting him and he stood down as chairman of Livestrong. Legal issues began to mount.

His former teammate Floyd Landis, a self-confessed cheat, filed a lawsuit against him for defrauding the U.S. government, while the London-based Sunday Times is suing Armstrong to recover about $500,000 it paid him to settle a libel lawsuit.

Armstrong could also be forced to pay back amounts including $7.5 million to SCA Promotions, a Dallas-based company that paid him a bonus for his Tour de France wins.

Throughout it all, Armstrong remained silent, unrepentant and seemingly unconcerned as the cycling world was left reeling by the revelations.

That was until last week, when he announced he had agreed to an interview with Winfrey, prompting speculation he was ready to confess he cheated.
